Rafaela is a 2022 Dominican film that delves into the struggles of a young woman trying to find her identity in the marginalized neighborhood of Capotillo, Santo Domingo. Directed by Tito Rodríguez and starring Judith Rodríguez, this dramatic thriller explores themes of resilience, personal battles, and the cycles of violence in underserved communities. Rafaela’s journey, marked by loss, betrayal, and personal growth, paints a vivid portrait of a woman navigating the harsh realities of her environment while daring to embrace love amidst chaos.
For this project, I designed the film’s poster, which earned the “Best Poster” award at the IX Premios La Silla 2023. The visual concept depicts Rafaela sitting on a throne, symbolizing her power and survival amidst a dystopian world of ruin and despair, surrounded by the remnants of societal decay. The imagery captures the essence of her strength and the harsh world she inhabits.
Rafaela has garnered critical acclaim, winning six ADOCINE awards, including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Actress, Best Leading Actor, Best Producer, and Best Poster. It has also received recognition at international festivals such as the Panama International Film Festival and the India International Film Festival, further cementing its impact in global cinema.
